Pfc. Gordon W. Logan Jr., 20, son of Mrs Herb Watkinson of Burlington and Gordon W. Logan of Aberdeen, was killed in action in Vietnam, Wednesday, 12 Nov 1969. It was learned this week. The family was notified of their son's death and told that they would be contacted later with additional information. The serviceman, a 1968 graduate of Anacortes High School, was a member of the Green Berets and had been in Vietnam since July. Funeral services are pending. (Anacortes American, Anacortes WA, Thursday 20 Nov 1969)

To The People
November 12, 1969 is a day that will never be forgotten by me. My brother Pfc. Gordon W. Logan Jr., was killed in Vietnam. Its a terrible, frightening time for me. I feel really alone knowing I can never talk to him or laugh with him again. He had so much going for him, now everything is wiped out and Gordy is laying somewhere in Vietnam waiting to come home to his friends and family one last time.
I can't help thinking about the War Moratorium last month. Maybe if they hadn't had it, my brother would still be alive. After the moratorium I got a letter from my brother, telling me how the communists had started a new offensive. Up until then things had been fairly quiet with little communist activity.
The North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong probably feel that the Americans don't really care if they kill their guys and that they aren't a proud people. Quite a few don't act like they are proud.
Maybe the people who want us to pull out all the troops immediately think after all we'll feel good and all the other nations of the world will smile at us and say once again America is a great country. Don't count on that for long. If we pull out right now and the Communists do take over and really mess up the rest of Southeast Asia, all of those countries that patted us on our backs will turn around and condemn us for leaving.
Gordy believed in freedom. Maybe that's why so many people are against the war. They might not truly believe in freedom. Ask yourselves how you would feel and act if a black family moved next door to you. After you have answered that truthfully then ask yourselves if you truly believe in freedom.
I dont want Gordy to have died in vain. I will always try in any little way I can to make this a better country. I am proud to be an American and I'm very proud of my brother. Gordy will always be a guide in my life and anything I try for in life and anything I try for in life will be from him. (Anacortes American, Anacortes WA, Thursday 20 Nov 1969)

To all the people:
Mark was like a brother to me. I want people to know that this young man was more than a face on a wall or a name on a wall. Mark was raised by his grandmother, since his father was dead and his mother wasn't able to cope. His grandmother was an incredible lady too, and she told me that she never once had to so much as raise her voice to Mark from the time he was a little boy. He was a loving and giving person. He wanted to become a lawyer, and he would have worked a lot of pro bono work for those unable to afford legal help. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved awful puns. Last memorial day, I went to his gravesite and left a rose in honor of his last name, a pun he would have relished.
I miss him every day of my life. He was a good person, one of the few that had no bad qualities that anyone could find, beyond the bad puns. He believed in the innate goodness of people. He also believed that the war in Vietnam was a necessary war. We disagreed. But I never ever gave any serviceman or woman a bad time about doing their duty. My quarrel was with the government that sent them, not with them. I was able to tell a Vietnam vet thank you last Memorial Day, at the cemetary that Mark is buried in, next to his father. I told him how grateful I was that he had made it back, for all the young men and women like Mark who did not.
We hugged and cried. I like to think Mark would have smiled and told me he was all right, not to grieve. I try not to. I try to be grateful for him being in my life.
For all the families and all the young people who went, whether they came back or not.
I'm proud of Mark. He did his duty by our country and he died for it and for us.
